One of the differences between casual video-game players and the folks who make a habit of winning tournaments is knowing how to improve and optimize your Pokémon’s base stats. It’s not hard, but most people just don’t know about it. Here’s what you need to know!
Base stats are not the six Pokémon stats you often see, such as HP, Attack, and Speed—base stats are actually the rate at which those defining stats will increase.
This is the primary way that you can affect how well your Pokémon stands up to others in battle.
A Pokémon’s stats grow when it battles, goes through Super Training, and levels up. The higher the Pokémon’s base stat is, the more its associated stat will increase.
For example, if a Pokémon levels up, its stats like HP will increase, but how fast they increase is based on that Pokémon’s base stat for HP, Attack, and so on.
Raise the Base
To supercharge a Pokémon, you can raise its base stats through Super Training, a new feature in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Two other ways of doing this are through battles and by using items, but the easiest way to target a specific base stat (and most fun!) is through Super Training.
There is a limit to how many times you can increase the base stats of individual Pokémon. So, if you’ve trained a Pokémon and decide you’ve made a mistake, there are two ways to reset all of your Pokémon’s base stats to begin anew: 1) Use a Reset Bag in Super Training or 2) give your Pokémon a Perilous Soup from the Juice Shop in Lumiose City. These will undo all of the work you’ve done for all of your Pokémon’s base stats.
But you don’t have to undo it all! If you want to lower a specific base stat, a Pokémon can eat certain Berries to do so.
Better Living Through Items
You may also use items to raise specific base stats, like Muscle Wings, which slightly increase one base stat, and Proteins, which give a bigger boost. You can stop by the Berry Shop in Lumiose City for stat-raising juices.
Finally, certain held items will also make it easier to increase your base stats through battling, such as Macho Brace, Power Weight, Power Bracer, Power Belt, Power Lens, Power Band, and Power Anklet.
Know your Pokémon
Two Pokémon of the same kind might have different stats. For example, one Pikachu might have a higher Sp. Atk than another Pikachu you just caught. Pay close attention to the individual Pokémon you want to train to take advantage of any characteristics it might have—don’t necessarily train them all the same way.
Nature
Pokémon also have a Nature. Nature makes one stat grow more quickly than average and usually makes a different one grow more slowly.
On your Pokémon’s Summary page, you may see that one stat appears in light pink and another in light blue. The light pink stat will grow more quickly, thanks to your Pokémon’s Nature, while the blue grows more slowly.
There’s no way to change a Pokémon’s Nature.
Hope this helped guys!
